- Copper
- Cu is the symbol for Copper, which is a chemical element in the IB group of the periodic table with an atomic number of 29 and atomic weight of 63.546. Its density is 8.92 g/cm³. The melting and boiling points of copper are 1357.77K (1084.62°C, 1984.32°F) and 2835 K(2562 °C, 4643 °F), respectively. Pure copper is a reddish-orange, soft metal with good ductility, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity and corrosion resistance. Copper and its alloys are stable in dry air, while a greenish layer will be formed in moist air which is called verdigris. In nature, copper can be divided into native copper, oxide copper ore and cupric sulfide ore. Hydrogen copper oxide, copper oxide and cupric sulfate are its common compounds. With its characteristics of abundant reserves in nature, good properties and easy processing, copper is widely used in the electronics, engineering, construction and transportation industries.
Copper was one of the first metals to be discovered, and was also the first in history to be used by human beings.
- Copper: discovery and industry development
- Copper was one of the first metals to be discovered, and was also the first in history to be used by human beings. It is conjectured that the copper beads discovered in northern Iraq, which were made of native copper, had been in existence for more than 10,000 years...
