- Lead
- Pb is the symbol for lead, which is a chemical element in the IVB group of the periodic table with an atomic number of 82 and atomic weight of 207.2. Its density is 11.3437 g•cm−3, while its melting point and boiling point are 600.61 K (327.46 °C, 621.43 °F) and 2022K (1749 °C, 3180 °F) respectively. Pure lead is a bluish-white metal. When it is exposed to air, a layer of the basic lead carbonate, which is grey black, will be formed on the surface. As a result, the lead we usually see is grey. Lead is malleable, with corrosion resistance and radioactive penetration resistance. As a common non-ferrous metal, lead’s annual sales and production rank it No.4 among non-ferrous metals (after aluminum, copper and zinc). Possessing good properties, lead, lead compounds and lead alloys can be widely used in batteries, cable sheaths, machinery manufacturing, ship manufacturing, light industry and lead oxide.
Lead is a kind of toxic and heavy metal, it mainly affects human health via the food chain, water and air.
